Free Medical Camp in Klang 2006

On Saturday, August 19th, we the volunteers Anja and Susann from Germany, met together with the other volunteers from Sai Ananda at our centre in Laksamana at 10a.m.
After a one-hour ride in private cars and our Sai Ananda bus about 30 volunteers arrived at the temple in Klang to prepare everything for the Medical Camp on the upcoming day.
Full of energy we started working. First we build up the 6 clinics by pinning sheets to the existing canopies. Then we packed up vitamin tablets for the adults and syrup for the children. Furthermore we filled up the bottles with delicing medicine. At the end of a very tiring day we went home to get some rest and be fit for the following day.

After a short night but a very strong coffee we were ready to leave for the “big day”. Arriving in Klang at 7.30 a.m, the last preparations had to be done. Strengthened by the delicious breakfast provided by the temple people everybody went to his assigned working place.
Masses of patients altogether almost 1000 (!) had to go through several stations. At the beginning the personal data of each person, including name, age, weight and the needed treatment had been collected at the registration tent. The second station was for all people the waiting area, since there was a big crush. To span this time, everybody was served beverages by a few dedicated volunteers.
Afterwards the 5 doctors of the general clinic investigated each person thoroughly. Adjacent the patients were sent to the dental clinic. In spite of the fear of some children, they left that area with a smile and a new toothbrush and Colgate toothpaste.
But that was not the only gift for everyone – at the next canopy they received free vitamins, deworming medicine and delicing medicine if needed. Moreover they were given fitting slippers, apples and for the youngsters a special bag with exercise books, pencil case and candy. If necessary they could move on to the eye clinic.
Inside the temple special tests, to prove their visual power, were waiting for them. Now the people received their prescripted medicine at the dispensary.
Finally the exhausted people chose their food from a huge range of rice, sambar, thahu sambal, potato-mealmaker…. equally the doctors and volunteers ate their lunch in the temple at about 1.30 p.m.
Experienced cooks squeezed fresh limejuice to fortify the patients for their way home and the workers to continue patiently their tasks.
When the last patients had left the Camp, the volunteers began to clean up the whole area. Eventually we packed everything in the transporters and headed for home, exhausted but happy.

This was the first Medical Camp for us, the two German volunteers. Concluding it was a great experience to see how so many people can be helped and treated with only simple facilities.
It was also amazing for us to see the gratefulness of the people and we enjoyed it very much.
All in all we appreciate the coorperation and the commitment of the Sai Ananda volunteers and are thankful to work there.

We are already looking forward to the next camp organized by Sai Ananda.
